Ghana expels three Israelis over il-treatment of its citizens

(MENAFN) Ghana took the step of deporting three Israeli nationals on Wednesday following accusations that Israeli authorities subjected Ghanaian travelers to “ill-treatment” at Ben Gurion Airport and carried out the “unjustified deportation” of three Ghanaians, according to a government statement.

“The Government of Ghana will continue to safeguard the dignity of its nationals and also that of other nationals,” the statement added, explaining that the action was a necessary measure to respond to the treatment of its citizens.

Reports indicate that Ghana summoned the acting head of Israel’s Embassy in Accra, as the ambassador was out of the country, and both sides agreed to pursue an “amicable” resolution to the dispute. Ghana emphasized that its nationals should be treated with the same respect and dignity expected of foreign citizens visiting the country.

Earlier, Accra condemned what it called the “inhumane” treatment of its citizens at Ben Gurion Airport, where several Ghanaians were either detained or deported. Seven citizens, including four members of a parliamentary delegation attending an international cybersecurity conference in Tel Aviv, were reportedly held without valid cause and released only after diplomatic intervention. Three other travelers were deported and returned to Ghana on the next available flight.

“This condemnable conduct by Israeli authorities is extremely provocative, unacceptable,” the ministry said, while rejecting Israel’s claim that Ghana’s embassy failed to cooperate during the deportation process, describing it as “totally untenable.” The statement noted that Ghana’s embassy in Tel Aviv had acted in accordance with international law.

Diplomatic relations between Ghana and Israel date back to 1957, shortly after Ghana’s independence. Relations were severed following the 1973 Arab-Israeli War but were restored in 1994, allowing for ongoing travel and bilateral cooperation.
